Unsubscribes and the do-not-contact list
Anybody you contact can ask to be left alone, either by replying and saying so or by using the unsubscribe link in an email. Either way they are added to your do-not-contact list, which is checked before every single message on every channel, and it is never overridden.
The three ways it happens
- They reply with something that reads as an opt-out. This is honoured automatically, without waiting for you to read it.
- They use the link at the bottom of an email.
- They use the unsubscribe button their mail client offers next to your name.
What it covers
Every way of reaching that person, not only the one they used. Somebody who says "stop emailing me" has not asked to be messaged on LinkedIn instead, and reading the request that narrowly is the sort of literalism that gets a company reported.
Anything already drafted or approved for them is cancelled immediately, so "I will stop" means today rather than at the next opportunity.
It has no expiry
Somebody who asked to be left alone years ago still means it. Old requests are honoured on exactly the same terms as new ones.
