Follow-ups

A play that sends a private message can carry a single follow-up, drafted at the same time as the first and sent a set number of days later if nobody has replied. It is one extra message, and there is no setting that can make it more.

One, not a sequence

Two messages is a nudge. Five is what gets an account restricted and a sender permanently ignored, and nothing here can express five.

What cancels it

  • Any reply, at any point. The follow-up is withdrawn automatically.
  • The first message not actually going out, whether you rejected it or it failed.
  • The person being added to your do-not-contact list.

What it may not say

A follow-up is refused outright if it announces that you are chasing. "Just following up", "bumping this", "did you see my message", "in case you missed it", "last attempt": all blocked.

They all do the same thing, which is to tell somebody their silence has been noticed and counted. That turns a message into a small obligation from a stranger, and the reliable answer to that is to keep ignoring it, now with irritation.

Their Q3 numbers came out this morning and the depot count is up 40 per cent. Worth a look?

Crossing to email

If you have connected a mailbox, a follow-up can go by email instead of LinkedIn. This is the single most useful thing a second channel does, because a LinkedIn message that goes unread otherwise has nowhere to go.

It only reaches people whose email address you have, and it carries an unsubscribe link, which the law requires of email and does not of LinkedIn.
