Signals

A signal is something that happened to somebody you know: a change of role, a post with a real point in it, a connection request accepted. Signals are what make a message worth sending, because the alternative is writing to somebody for no reason, which is what everybody else does.

What is watched

  • A change of role or job title.
  • A new post, where the post has enough substance to respond to.
  • A connection request being accepted.

Why the list is short

Everything on it is checked in bulk, which costs no profile views and does not look like activity to LinkedIn. Anything that would need looking at people one by one is not on the list, because that is the behaviour LinkedIn restricts accounts for.

A great many posts are also skipped. A repost with no comment, a one line congratulation, an advert for a webinar: responding to those produces a comment that reads as though nobody read the post, which costs more than the missed opportunity gains.

Newly noticed is not newly happened

The first time your network is read, everybody in it is new to the product. That does not mean everybody in it just changed job. Events have to be genuinely recent to trigger anything, which is why the first week is quieter than you might expect.
